Oct 11, 2011

Marianne Parks, Chairperson, along with Diane Baskin, Sharon Wassell, Beth Jennings, and Mary Jo Bosway did a fantastic job at the welcome center planting colorful fall pansies. A walk along the trail helped to identify a couple more trees for the arboretum project.

2011-12 Online Archive

SOUTHWIND GARDEN CLUB
2011-12

This online archive project allows a glimpse into the meetings, projects and activities of the Southwind Garden Club. We have a two fold purpose for this project, to inform our members on projects and progress and to educate perspective new members on the activities of the club.

We will highlight effort and design centering around floral and landscape design, horticulture, and advanced gardening. Through this effort we aim to cultivate new friendships and further our passion for all things floral.

SPRING PLANTING AT CHUCALISSA

Marianne Parrs does a wonderful job as chairman of the Chucalissa committee. She recently gathered some of her committee members and made a visit to the museum to do some cleanup of winter debris and get some planting done.

Marianne plants the seeds of "the three sisters".... corn, beans and squash .... in much the same way as the native Americans did long ago.

Marianne's neighbor, Mary, came along to help out.

Digging and pulling weeds is so much fun!

Nan and Mary work on one of the extra large planters on the museum grounds.

Mary, Nan, Marianne and Carol enjoyed their gardening task on an absolutely perfect weather day.

MAY MEETING BEGINS NEW OFFICERS' TERM

The May meeting was held at the home of Rena Baker. Out-going president Lila presided for her final time with a brief business meeting that was then followed by the installation of our new officers for 2011-2013. Everyone enjoyed the delicious luncheon that came afterward.

Julie Wilson, District I Director, attended our meeting and installed the new officers.

A great lineup for the next 2 years!

New president, Ganelle Ballard, is installed by Julie.

A fun poem was read to Lila by her board members that have served with her for the past 2 years.

Linda presented Lila with a framed copy of the poem.

MAY YARD OF THE MONTH

Our awards committee is back at work again looking throughout the Southwind neighborhood for the most beautiful yards. They have selected the home of Michael and Jennifer Mugavero, 8508 Tournament Drive, as the yard of the month for the month of May.

MARCH MEETING ON THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING

We had a beautiful Spring morning to get together for our March meeting at the home of Carol Humphries.

Elizabeth Blaylock delighted us all with her horticulture entry. It smelled wonderful! She grew this from one of the bulbs that she purchased from our club fund raiser last Fall.

Ganelle made a brief talk about her preparations that she has begun for her upcoming term as our president.

...and, of course, there were goodies to be eaten.

Richard Babin and Paul Bruns were the presenters for our program. They are landscape architects with Good Winds Landscape and Garden Center. We learned some great tips from them on garden design. They have designed and constructed some beautiful outdoor spaces right here in our own neighborhood.

Here, Richard and Lila get to know our newest member, Debbie Richmond (center). She is a very talented artist and will be a great addition to our club. We are so glad to have her.

FEBRUARY MEETING

Our February meeting was held at TPC Southwind on Tuesday, February 22.

Missy and Mary Jo were excellent hostesses with some delicious goodies.

We had two new members there. Nancy Barnett (left) and Susan Hevey (right) are going to be a great addition to our group.

Elizabeth got everyone excited about the wonderful centerpieces she has for us to create for an upcoming luncheon event.

Tracy Burke, from International Paper Co., presented a great program called "Down to Earth" - A Practical Look at the Environment.

Sharon and Mary Jo listen intently to all of the good information that we learned from Tracy's program.
